Metallurgical Customer Support Engineer

Job Description

We are currently searching for a Customer Support Engineer with experience in metallurgical engineering, testing, and manufacturing.  Must have technical knowledge of steel products and manufacturing processes in downstream industries.  This is a direct hire opportunity with a well-established and growing company in the metro Detroit area.  The position will work remotely out of your home office, but 40% travel is required as needed to customer sites in the local Detroit area, Midwest U.S., and southeast Canada. A local office in downtown Detroit is also available for use if necessary.   
The position will be a customer technical liaison to major customers and end users. You will build & maintain excellent technical service contacts, to understand customer business, engineering, and manufacturing processes.  This person is the principal point of contact for all technical aspects at the specified customer(s) plants, providing a wide range of technical services, including material selection, problem-solving, resolution of quality complaints, implementation of improvements, and other technical challenges that the customers bring forward. 
  • First point of contact for day-to-day technical questions and problems to the customer base in North America. 
  • Coordinate complaint investigations with the manufacturing site
  • Review technical performance at customers with agreed KPIs in coordination with the Lead Technical Engineer
  • Carry out investigations on defective material or were needed coordinate the investigation performed at the supplying plant
  • Communicate and coordinate with the supplying plants for improvements and corrective actions
  • Monitor customer plant performance and identify improvements projects if part of the customer service agreement
  • Act as the technical contact and reduce the number of complaints and improve customer technical satisfaction

Job Requirements

  • Proven experience in the field of product quality management in steel manufacturing and / or steel-consuming industries.
  • Fluency in English
  • Ability to identify technical and commercial opportunities for the business
  • Technical understanding of high-speed production lines
  • Ability to resolve conflicts in a tactful way
  • Flexibility to accommodate time zone differences
  • Good communication, presentation, and discussion skills
  • Ability to develop and facilitate effective customer relationship
